Vulvodynia

What it is, how it manifests, and can physical therapy can help.

Vulvodynia is characterized by pain or discomfort around the opening of the vagina (vulva). The pain is often described as burning or irritation, which makes sitting for long periods of time very uncomfortable, and intercourse very painful.

Symptoms can be unprovoked (constant) or provoked (with sitting or touch to the vulva). There is no single cause of this condition and vulvodynia often requires multiple care providers to address the contributing factors.

Pelvic health physical therapy can help to determine the underlying causes and can help treat vulvodynia by focusing on pelvic floor muscle relaxation and development of a self care program.
